ANC welcomes resolution by newly elected PDC

4 November 1996

The ANC Western Cape welcomes the resolution passed by the Provincial Development Council which was launched today at the Spier Estate outside Stellenbosch.

The PDC, while recognising the right of provincial government to nominate its representatives to the PDC, expressed concern that only two reps had been nominated and that these reps were not from the provincial government. The PDC called on the Provincial Cabinet to nominate a third representative from the Provincial Government itself.

The ANC has consistently said that Government is a full partner in the development process. Thus it should send senior members to represent it on the PDC just as labour , business and civil society have done. We were thus dismayed when the NP MEC for Development Planning, Mr Lampie Fick, appointed Mr Chris April and Mr Theo Behrens to represent government on the PDC. The standing committee had agreed that government reps should come from the government itself.

We expect that the cabinet meeting on Wednesday will appoint a senior representative from government to the PDC.
