ANC outraged at yet another two child victims

27 March 2003

The ANC Western Cape is outraged that yet another two school children became the latest victims to gang violence on the Cape Flats. A twelve-year-old boy and fourteen-year-old girl were caught in the crossfire between two rival gangs while on their way to the Eerste River High School this morning. We are relieved and happy they were not killed.

The girl was hit in the upper thigh and the boy in the lower back. They have been rushed to the Tygerberg Hospital and have still not been discharged. They are reportedly fine and in a stable condition, but severely traumatised. They are receiving counselling.

The parents, teachers and school children were also severely traumatised and many had to receive counselling. The school closed early.

The ANC Leadership commend our local branch members for giving their support to the school, the teachers and the pupils. After hearing the gunshots, many of our members immediately rushed to the school to help protect the children and offered support.

The Cape Flats communities have barely buried the recent child victims, and now this. It is absolutely deplorable and despicable.

We commend the police and Community Safety Minister Leonard Ramatlakane for the swift reaction and arrests of four perpetrators. The community have also played their part and we urge all communities to continue to co-operate with the police.
