MEC`s Hangana, Fransman and Essop speak at ANC by-election rallies in Swellendam and Barrydale tonight

13 March 2003

As part of the ANC`s build up to the 19th March, when by-elections will be held in Barrydale and Swellendam, the ANC has organised public meetings in both wards tonight.

In Barrydale, a former ANC ward, only the ANC, PAC and an independent are standing. The DA and NNP have not put up candidates. Swellendam is a former DA ward which became NNP when the late councillor Mrs van Zyl left the DA and joined the NNP. Mrs van Zyl passed away in December last year. In this ward the ANC, NNP, DA and PAC are contesting.

The Swellendam ANC meeting will start at 7pm in the Railton Community Hall, Swellendam. ANC candidate Dalthea Basson will also speak at the meeting. MEC`s Nomatyala Hangana (Housing), Marius Fransman (Social Services and Poverty Alleviation) and Tasneem Essop (Transport, Public Works and Property Management) will speak.

The Barrydale ANC meeting will start at 8pm in the Fortshaven community hall, Barrydale. Ministers Hangana and Essop will speak here together with ANC candidate Peet Kees.

Election news

  • The DA suffered major embarassment last night when community members and ANC supporters alleged that their candidate in Swellendam, Mrs Charlie Fourie, got lost on the way to the community hall and had to get directions. The DA held a poorly attended meeting in Swellendam last night despite bussing 30 people from Slangrivier which is an area 40km`s away. They also provided boerewors rolls and free beer to those attending.
  • ANC reaches out to white community in Barrydale and Swellendam - a number of house meetings have taken place with white voters in both wards. On Monday 17th at 13h00 ANC MPL Cameron Dugmores and Speaker Lynne Brown will address a forum in the municipal office in Barrydale.

A number of meetings are also being arranged for ANC provincial leader and MEC for finance Ebrahim Rasool who will visit Swellendam on Monday 17th March. Mr Rasool will also address the ANC`s final meeting in Swellendam at 6pm in the community hall on 17th March.

It appears that a number of white voters in Swellendam are disillusioned with the corruption scandals which have rocked the province and particularly the manner in which the DA dealt with the harksen matter, and are prepared to give the ANC a chance because of the work local ANC councillors have done. The President`s call to push back the frontiers of poverty by working together is striking accord amongst voters.
