ANC WESTERN CAPE TO ATTEND MEETING CALLED BY NDUNGANE

Issued by: ANC Western Cape

The ANC Western Cape has accepted the invitation to attend a meeting of political leaders called by Archbishop Ndungane for Saturday morning. Commenting on the proposed meeting and prospects for peace in the Nyanga/KTC area, ANC provincial Leader Ebrahim Rasool said:

"Our call over the last three days on all our members to be activists for peace and to refrain from any form of accusations until the SAPS investigations are complete, has borne fruit.

"We care confindent that our branch and zonal leadership are taking the message of peace and tolerance to the ground. It is vital that this process continues over the weekend, especially in the light of registration having been extended until Monday.

"Our programme this week to ensure that our members and supporters collect their registration certificates from home affairs and register has been affected by the violence. We are confident that the relative peace that has been achieved will ensure a smooth conclusion to the registration process.

"The call by Archbishop Ndungane is supported by the ANC. We believe that we should also make use of the IEC structures such as the provincial party liaison committee which meets today to deal with issues related to the registration and election campaign.

"We hope that Saturday's meeting will assist in creating the conditions for peace during the election campaign throughout the province. This will require commitments to ensure access to farms and all communities throughout the province. We also need a policy to deal with those who publicly threaten the freedom of speech of others," added Mr Rasool.
