ANC and Western Cape mourn loss of Riyahd Williams

28 January 2002 when he became an MPL for his much loved ANC in the Western Cape

ANC MPL for the Western Cape Comrade Riyahd Williams was killed at 06h50 this morning in a road accident on the N1 outside Worcester. Riyahd Williams was 48. A lawyer by profession, Comrade Riyahd was Mayor of Worcester from 1994 to 1999 Legislature. He served as Spokesperson on Tourism in the Legislature, a Whip and a member of the Provincial Executive Committee of the ANC. Riyahd is survived by his wife Zenith and children Sariena and Faizel.

ANC Western Cape Leader and Minister of Finance and Business Promotion, Ebrahim Rasool mourned the death of Riyahd Williams saying: "The death of Riyahd Williams is a great and untimely loss to us all. Comrade Riyahd was one of the most talented, quietly committed, hard working and fundamentally good people I have known. We are left shocked, saddened and deeply struck by this unexpected loss of a comrade, colleague and friend. Riyahd Williams was a man of the people, the people will miss him.

"This great tragedy is a stark sign to us all that road safety affects everyone. Hamba Kahle Comrade Riyahd. We will miss you in the challenges we still face. To the Williams family, go our sincere condolences and heartfelt fellow grief."

A Memorial Service will be held this evening at the Worcester Town Hall at 18h00. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 10h00 according to Muslim rites. Venue: 10 Kollie Nelson Avenue, Panorama, Worcester.
