ANC mobilises members to clean up schools

7 February 2002

In continuation of the ANC`s campaign of the Year of the Volunteer for Reconstruction and Development, the ANC Western Cape will this month focus on Education. To this end the ANC has mobilised its leaders, public representatives and hundreds of members across the province to repair and clean up schools this weekend.

On Saturday 9 February from about 09h00 in the morning, ANC members including National and Provincial Leaders, Ministers, Members of Parliament and the Provincial Legislature and Councillors will be joining school staff and local communities to clean up and repair some of the most ravaged schools.

At least 14 schools in the city have been targeted. Branches in the rural areas will also be volunteering their services in their local communities.

With a combination of donations from businesses and fundraising from branches, the ANC has secured about 700 litres of paint, 100 rollers and trays, 100 brushes, enough volumes of Handy Andy, Windolene, Jik, Jays Fluid, and Harpic detergents, floor polish, sand paper, glazing putty, building sand and papers.

Among the things members are expected to do are repairing door handles, applying polly filler to roofs, sweeping, washing and disinfecting floors and windows of classrooms and toilets, as well as painting classrooms and cutting the grass.

The schools targeted are from the historically poor communities in the townships and the Cape Flats, but also a traditionally wealthy school, Constantia Primary in Westlake, where ANC members will sweep the class floors, paint and cut the grass.
