ANC Motion on spy scandal

ANC Motion on spy scandal

25 March 2002

ANC MPL Whitey Jacobs today tabled a motion in the Provincial Legislature regarding the alleged espionage on elected and public officials in the Legislature. The Motion was accepted by all parties in the House [ANC, NNP, UDM, ACDP] except for the DP. The Motion read as follows:

The ANC welcomes and supports the decision by the Executive to appoint a judicial Commission of Enquiry into allegations surrounding the appointment of former NIS agents to the Provincial administration.

Notes the unusual and potentially undemocratic and illegal nature of the revelations to date with grave concern and disquiet.

Notes statements made by the honourable Leader of the Opposition, Mr Hennie Bester in the weekend press regarding the appointment of these persons.

Calls on the Executive to ensure that the terms of reference for the Enquiry include any connection between the information being gathered by this group and the polling and research conducted on behalf of the Provincial Administration and the Unicity by consultants including the highly paid Ryan Coetzee.

Further calls on the Executive to ensure that the Enquiry should examine whether information gathered in this exercise was being used for party political purposes.

ANC Chief Whip Garth Strachan said: "It is noteworthy that DA Provincial Leader Hennie Bester has volunteered information to the press ahead of the Enquiry. One must wonder whether this is this an attempt at damage control? If so, what will the Enquiry reveal?"
