Orbituaries: Van Resburg and Biehl

3 April 2002

The ANC Western Cape wants to extend its sincerest condolences to the families of Father Basil van Rensburg and Mr Peter Biehl.

It is with great sadness that we will say Hamba Kahle to two outstanding human beings.

Father Basil van Rensburg could so easily have closed his eyes to the suffering of the people of District Six and later Gugulethu.

Yet he chose, quite deliberately, to take up their cause, and to do it in the way he knew best, as a man of religion.

It was people like Basil van Rensburg who prevented our struggle against apartheid from becoming a struggle against a particular skin colour, and he prevented religion from ever becoming irrelevant in the search for freedom and democracy.

Most importantly, his example helped to keep our struggle human and our ideals noble. The ANC will miss Father Van Rensburg.

Peter Biehl, who could so easily have been embittered towards South Africa following the tragic and senseless killing of Amy, became rather one of South Africa┬╣s best friends.

Peter and Linda Biehl turned mourning into commitment, loss into contribution, and sadness into reconciliation.

Our townships are better places following the presence of the Biehls. They have embraced our reconstruction and reconciliation messages far more wholesome than many South Africans.
