ANC reaction to Morkel`s refusal to resign

17 April 2002

The ANC Western Cape will continue its efforts to unseat the Mayor Gerald Morkel in next week`s council meeting.

This was the reaction today of ANC Provincial Leader Ebrahim Rasool who said he was "absolutely disappointed" that Mr Morkel did not heed the call to do the honourable thing, "which was to resign"

Said Mr Rasool: "We will definitely now continue with our motion of no confidence in the council next week.

"However from our experiences in the past, motions of such nature have to be conducted by way of a secret ballot. Therefore this is what we want to pursue now.

"We must win the battle for a secret ballot prior to the motion of no confidence.

"Council must act against Mr Morkel, either by way of the motion of no confidence vote or at the very least institute an official inquiry," said Mr Rasool.

The ANC Unicity Caucus strongly supports the Provincial Leader and said it had today not received any notice that the DA will act against Mr Morkel and accede to the demand for his resignation.

The Caucus has begun talking to other parties and Councillors and initial indications are that many are sharing the view that Mr Morkel be removed.
