Ebrahim Rasool responds to allegations by CapeTalk

16 April 2002

CapeTalk radio host John Maytham yesterday alleged during an interview that he had "impeccable information" the ANC had received R100 000 from fugitive German businessman Jurgen Harksen. Ebrahim Rasool, the Provincial Chairman of the ANC today dismissed the allegations.

He said: "The African National Congress - Western Cape, is satisfied that we have not received any funds from Mr Harksen. We are aware of approaches that were made through intermediaries and are happy that these have been unsuccessful. If anyone is aware of individuals who may have been compromised, that information should be provided to us, as concretely as has been the allegations against Mayor Gerald Morkel and the Democratic Alliance (DA).

In the absence of such concrete information we treat these allegations as nothing but an attempt to divert attention away from the crisis in which Mr Morkel and the DA find themselves. We reiterate our call for Morkel to resign or be fired and the Desai Commission to investigate the matter".
