Statement by Cde Mcebisi Skwatsha, ANC Western Cape Provincial Secretary on death of Steve Tshwete

27 April 2002

"Death of Steve Tshwete - Freedom fighter and hero of the liberation struggle"

The ANC Western Cape has received the news of the death of Steve Tshwete, the Minister of Safety and Security with a sense of great loss and sadness.

The heart of a lion of South Africa`s liberation struggle has ceased to beat. It is a heart, which beat in unison, through many of the most difficult years of the struggle against apartheid with the wishes and aspirations of our people.

In the underground, in mass struggles including the UDF, on Robben Island, in exile, in Umkhonto we Sizwe, in the ranks of the African National Congress and in government, Steve Tshwete never wavered in his courage and commitment to our noble cause. As a father, comrade and friend to all those who knew him, his memory will live on and inspire generations to come. We must take forward his legacy as we undertake the complex task of building a society free from the evils of racism and poverty.

To his wife, sis Pam and family, we extend our deepest condolences. Your loss is the nation`s loss.

Comrade Steve has joined the long and honoured ranks of the many hreoes and heroines who gave their lives to our struggle.

Hamba kahle Qhawe lame Qhawe.

A Memorial Service for the late Comrade Steve Tshwete will be held on Thursday 2nd May 2002 at 18h00 at the Gugulethu Sports Complex, corner NY1 and NY2.
