ANC CALLS FOR SETTLEMENT ON THE LONG-LINE COURT CASE

ANC CALLS FOR SETTLEMENT ON THE LONG-LINE COURT CASE

Issued African National Congress Western Cape

10 DECEMBER 1999

It is with great concern that the ANC in the Western Cape notes that that catching, processing and marketing of long line hake has been barred pending a court case. This has major negative implications for the opportunities of December when the market is at its best.

Commenting on the issue, ANC Provincial Deputy Secretary and Spokesperson on Fishing, Marius Fransman said:

"More disturbing is that the people of Paternoster, Mossel Bay, Arniston and other like coastal communities who are dependant for the rest of the year on catching in this period, will suffer because of this case and the selfish agendas of the privileged.

"The ANC Fishing Desk calls on all those embroiled in the case to come to an immediate settlement so that the boats can go out and people can get food onto their tables.

"We also call on the Presiding Officer to expedite finalisation of the matter and not allow further delays."
