Response by ANC to Premier Marais` statement on DA gay conspiracy against him

13 May 2002

ANC Western Cape Provincial Secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha today responded to the statements by Premier Peter Marais, saying even though we do not necessarily agree with him, the ANC respects his right to voice his opinions.

Said Skwatsha: "According to the agreement between the ANC and the New National Party, each of the parties is allowed to disagree on issues.

"Under the agreement we are allowed to have differences, and differences do exist. Premier Marais is therefore entitled to his opinions.

"Fortunately all party political and personal opinions are subject to the Constitution. We are happy that the Constitution is strong and does not tolerate discrimination against any group or person on the basis of their persuasion.

"The Constitution is clear on the issues raised by Premier Marais and we have no doubt that the Premier`s respect for the Constitution is undiminished."
