Leon`s ultimatum plunges DA into deepest crisis yet

12 October 2001

ANC provincial leader Ebrahim Rasool responds to the unfolding DA power struggle, saying:

"Tony Leon`s written ultimatum to Peter Marais indicates the depth of the crisis facing the DA. We have always said that the Heath Commission was appointed by Tony Leon to to get rid of Peter Marais. This had nothing to do with fighting corruption.

"It is clear that the DP, who are determined that the DA remains a vehicle to preserve white privilege, are cracking the whip. Tony leon`s bully boy tactics are creating massive tensions throughout the DA ranks. Whas it guilty feelings or bravado from Ryan Coetzee and Tony Leon which led to the placing of the "coconut" adds in the Argus and Die Burger today? Whatever the motive - the DA cannot hide its attempts to sideline coloured interests within the DA. This has never and will never be a party for all the people.

"Bickering and infighting have become the hall-mark of DA governance. The people of the Western Cape are the losers. As the ANC we will continue to focus on meeting the needs of all our people and speeding up change in our province."
