Marais`s DA firing is a sign of a party that has lost its way

19 October 2001

ANC Leader of the Opposition Ebrahim Rasool has responded to today`s firing of Cape Town`s DA Mayor as follows:

"The ANC notes today’s firing of Peter Marais by Tony Leon. We anticipate that this is just another episode in an intractable problem for the DA and we expect that this matter will probably wend its way right up to the High Court. This is further bad news for the people of Cape Town who deserve some dignity now. The bun fight in the DA has diminished the pride of Capetonians.

"The flood victims in squatter camps have had to watch in a state of homelessness while this drama unfolded. The residents of Mitchells Plan have had to riot about evictions and water cuts in order to be heard above the battle noise of Leon and Marais. These are the consequences of a party that has lost its way. When the egos of Messrs. Leon, van Schalkwyk and Marais are elevated above the needs of people.

"What the citizens of CT need urgently is good, stable, delivering government. We fear that the DA is unable to provide this, with or without Marais."
