ANC calls for moratorium on Provincial appointments

ANC calls for moratorium on Provincial appointments

22 November 2001

The ANC caucus in the Provincial Legislature called in its meeting today for an immediate moratorium on the filling of all posts in the Western Cape Administration.

Chief Whip Leonard Ramatlakane said: "The DA has rushed through appointments in the Unicity and will try to do the same in the Provincial Administration. They are doing this in the middle of talks that are set to remove the DA from power. They seem hell bent on entrenching their candidates at the expense of representivity and transformation.

"We cannot afford an unrepresentative civil service, especially at management level. We cannot allow the status quo to remain. The Transformation 2000 programme of the DA has proven to be nothing but window dressing.

"It is unacceptable that the DA is still ignoring Constitutional imperatives, seven years into the new democratic order. The DA is imposing its apartheid style patronage politics on the Western Cape. They insist on making this Province pay millions to entrench their sectarian interests. The benefits attached to these posts are excessive and in many cases double those of the same posts in Gauteng.

"The ANC caucus in the Legislature strongly calls on the Provincial government to immediately impose a moratorium on all appointments."
