ANC rejects DA`s desperate attempt to "keep the ANC out"

26 November 2001

The ANC rejects the DA`s assertion that the ANC cannot claim the seats on the Unicity Executive Committee that the ANC is entitled to in terms of the Municipal Structures Act.

Said ANC Provincial Leader Ebrahim Rasool: "The DA`s legal advise of late is without credibility. They have lost court case after court case.

"We will immediately take this issue up with the MEC for Local Government Pierre Uys to intervene.

"The DA must remember it was them that opted for a Mayoral Committee system rather than an Executive Mayoral system.

"Their spurious argument to keep the ANC out sounds more like political desperation than sound legal judgement.

"It is clear they are desperate to install Gerald Morkel as Mayor. It will cost five of their members to lose their seats in order to install Morkel as Mayor and grant the ANC its seats on Exco."
