Elsies River vigil for baby girl rape victim

26 November 2001

A Prayer Service and Vigil for the eight-month-old baby girl rape victim from Elsies River and all victims of violence against women and children will take place tomorrow [Tuesday 27th November] in Elsies River. The Vigil has been planned by the ANC in Elsies River, including the Women’s League, Constituency office and Councilors.

Religious and community leaders and ANC officials will speak at the Prayer Service and Vigil. This forms part of the campaign: "Sixteen days activism against violence against women".

Mathilda Vantura, ANC MPL for Elsies River said: "Our community is deeply shocked and hurt that this evil act took place amongst us. The Vigil will help us to mourn, but also to work together. We can never allow violence in a democratic, united, non-racist and non-sexist country. Our streets and homes must be safe for all of us; children, women and men."

The Vigil will take place as follows:

Venue: The Rapha Church in Balvenie Road, Elsies River
Time: Tues. 27th November at 18h30
