ANC Western Cape Spokesperson for Safety and Security Shaun Byneveldt has condemned the shootings of two SAPS members this weekend. Inspector C. Barendse of the Khayelitsha Police Station was shot yesterday in Mfuleni, he died from his wounds this morning in Groote Schuur Hospital. Sergeant TN Nobdade is in a critical condition in the N1 City Hospital after being shot during over the weekend.

Byneveldt said: "The ANC condemns the shooting of police members with shock and anger. Their lives as peace keepers are invaluable to us, especially in high crime areas. We cannot put an end to the scourge of crime if the lives of even the SAPS are at risk. We call for full investigations into these shootings and for the full force of the law to be applied. Community members with any information on these shootings must please come forward with courage. The SAPS must be safe to carry out their crucial role in a democratic and equal society.

"Our sincere condolences go to the family, friends and colleagues of Inspector Barendse and wishes for a speedy and full recovery to Sergeant Nobdade."
