ANC horror and dismay at latest girl child rape and murder

3 December 2001

Luzile Phillips from Greyton [Caledon district] is the latest victim of violence and sexual abuse against young girls. The twelve-year-old left a family birthday party yesterday to buy electricity. She was found this morning raped and murdered.

Shaun Byneveldt MPL and ANC Western Cape Spokesperson on Safety and Security expressed his deep horror and dismay and sincere condolences to the family this morning. He said: "Our children must be safe! These children are our children. The first post apartheid generations deserve a secure future, especially young girls and women. This evil violation and murder cannot be repeated anywhere.

"The ANC calls for unity and calm action. These horrors affect us all. These children are our children. We must all join the fight against these crimes being repeated against anyone. It is a serious indictment of the DA that this Province still has no action plan for youth and women. We need this urgently, now more than ever. Our women and children must be safe. We must honour these child victims of sexism and violence by actively building a truly safe and equal future for all of us.

"The ANC expresses its deepest sympathy to the family of Luzile. Your loss is our loss. We stand with you for healing and justice."
