Minister Fransman visits Ceres elderly

11 December 2001

The Minister of Social Services and Poverty Alleviation for the Western Cape, Mr Marius Fransman believes that the initiative of the Ceres Local Authority, in hosting a Christmas lunch in honour and appreciation of the elderly in the area, is commendable and should be promoted on a wider scale.

The Christmas lunch was organised by the local authority and sponsored by the local business community for the benefit of approximately 200 older persons from all areas and surrounding the town of Ceres. It was hosted in the Town Hall and was attended by the Mayor, Mr John Schuurman, the Minister and local townsfolk.

The treatment of older persons is coming under closer public scrutiny as recognition grows that older persons are vulnerable to abuse, neglect and exploitation. Whilst there is much publicity around the neglect and abuse of the elderly, there are also many initiatives by communities, NGO’s and government to create awareness around the issues affecting older persons. At this time of year it is especially important to respect and honour the role of older persons in their contribution to society. Minister Fransman accordingly is making the care of the elderly one of the priorities of his ministry.
