DA desperate as it prepares to lose battle for Cape Town

12 December 2001

Responding to the DA’s intention of electing Gerald Morkel as Mayor of Cape Town, Chairperson of the ANC in the Western Cape and MEC for Finance and Business Promotion Ebrahim Rasool, said:

"As the DA goes through the current political process, it is displaying increasing desperation. They are losing the battle for the allegiance of Cape Town Councilors as the walkover clause nears. The DP is severely mistaken if they think that Morkel is their salvation.

"If the DA insists on the farce of electing Morkel as Mayor on Thursday, they must know that the ANC has four Exco positions due to it first. The DA will have to sacrifice four positions according to all legal opinions to accommodate the ANC and achieve proportionality. We predict that the DA will not hesitate to sacrifice NNP members.

"Should the DA try to circumvent the law, the ANC will have no option but to call on the MEC for Local Government to intervene again, taking legal action if necessary."
