Response on the nomination of Peter Marais as DA Mayoral candidate for Cape Town

7 October 2000

The nomination of Peter Marais as DA candidate for Cape Town is an unhappy compromise for the DA and one which does not enjoy unanimous support even within the NNP caucus.

It is clear that many of the "die-hard liberals still left in the DP" are seriously concerned about the nomination but had been whipped into line by Tony Leon.

Peter Marais is an over-hyped and under-performing politician. Within NP circles he is often referred to as a politician who has never managed to win an election on his own.

Marais has also betrayed those in the NNP who see the DP and DA as an anti-transformation alliance. They had hoped that he would challenge the DA on policy matters such as rates, which have been discriminating against Coloured ratepayers who have effectively subsidised those in the wealthy areas.

Last year the ANC received more votes from the Coloured community than the NNP. This despite Peter Marais` efforts. Our own research and work on the ground shows that this trend is continuing.

It is impossible for anyone to sell the DA`s policies which are premised on the preservation of privilege, to the majority of voters in the Unicity.
