ANC Western Cape satisfied with registrations over the weekend

17 September 2000

The ANC Western Cape is satisfied with how registrations proceeded over the weekend.

In his assessment of the registration weekend, ANC Provincial Secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha said:

"We are generally happy with the proceedings over the weekend and we congratulate the IEC on a well-organised registration drive.

"But there are certain areas which we think we need to concentrate on which could potentially give us problems on election day. We will take it up with the IEC.

"We take note of the low registration turnout, but this could possibly be due to the fact that the majority of voters are already registered.

"Other factors could also include previous door-to-door registration drives and continuous registration points. We will continue to mobilize our supporters to register.

"We commend our members and supporters for their discipline over the weekend and once again reiterate our stance on free and fair political activity.

"What was particularly encouraging was the enthusiasm of many farm workers, including the example of one farm worker from Albertinia who walked 32km with his wife to register and also speak to the Deputy Minister of Agriculture about recent assaults at the hands of a farmer in the district.

"It would appear that farm workers such as he understand the importance of making their voices heard in the forthcoming local elections."
