Statement by Ebrahim Rasool on an alleged ANC plot to kidnap Premier Gerald Morkel

20 July 2000

The ANC dismisses with contempt the allegation that it wants to kidnap Premier Gerald Morkel. This is a truly bizare claim.

We know Premier Morkel as an invisible Premier, overshadowed by almost everyone in his cabinet.

We know that he has tried to pull quite a few stunts in order to become more visible. We remember clearly that he only featured prominently when he dyed his hair and when he dropped his pants for the front page for a local newspaper.

There are clearly the signs of a politician desperate for publicity and we place the kidnap claims in the same category.

Why would we want to kidnap Gerald Morkel? He is, after all, our biggest ally in the local election campaign, just as he was in last year¹s election when he led the NNP to defeat in the Western Cape.

Come on, Gerald, try again!
