`Defections`: PAC claims nonsense, says ANC

13 July 2000

The ANC Western Cape dismisses as nonsense the ludicrous claim by Patricia de Lille that 1 000 ANC members from Blue Downs have joined the PAC.

Commenting on this, ANC Western Cape Head of Communications Cameron Dugmore said:

"This is all about a handful of local government candidate hopefuls trying their luck with the PAC.

"With local government elections around the corner it is understandable that Ms de Lille is desperate to find at least a few people who want to stand as candidates.

"In Blue Downs the ANC has four branches and zonal structure. Our combined membership is at present less than one thousand.

"We have been in contact with our branches and zones today and it is clear that Mr Tomson, his wife and family members constitute the sum total of those who have joined the PAC.

"While we never enjoy even losing a single member, we are confident that the majority of voters in the Western Cape have confidence in the ANC as the agent to bring about change.

"Like in Calitzdorp before the elections last year when Ms de Lille also paraded defectors who have now come back to us, we are sure that these members will also find their ways home."
