ANC Western Cape statement on the formation of the Democratic Alliance

26 June 2000

Speaking after a meeting of the ANC Western Cape Provincial Working Committee last night (Monday 26 June), Deputy Chairperson NomaIndia Mfeketo said:

"The ANC find it amusing that the NNP are so comfortable with being swallowed up by Tony Leon.

"Mr Leon has summed it all up when he told newspapers over the weekend that Œthe policies are the DP`s and I am the Leader what more can I says.

"This is a clear indication that Gerald Morkel and Marthinus van Schalkwyk have sold the vote of poor Coloured people to the party of rich and the privilege.

"Again the poor African and Coloured communities of the Western Cape will be loosing out. It will be interesting to see how many African and Coloured Mayors and Councillors will emerge from this Alliances

"To the progressive liberals we ask: do you really want to be associated with a party of Apartheid relics?

"Do you really want to be associated with an Alliance against Transformation and empowerment of the poor?

"Do you really want to be associated with an Alliance against the sound economic policies of this country?"
