Saron accepts ANC Deployment

Saron accepts ANC Deployment

9 June 2000

At a public meeting convened in the Beerwinkel Hall in Saron last night (Thursday 9 June 2000) the vast majority of residents accepted the ANC¹s decision that Councillor Johan Witbooi be elected as Mayor and Hubert Lesch as his deputy.

The ANC convened the meeting to explain the decisions of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) and the National Disciplinary Committee (NDC).

Last year the ANC decided that Saron Mayor Dan Kotze should step down. This decision was not implemented by certain ANC Councillors and resulted in a disciplinary process which led to the expulsion of Councillors Kotze and Lesch.

On appeal to the NDC the Councillors were found guilty of failing to implement the ANC¹s decision but their expulsion was withdrawn subject to an apology and commitment by the members to implement to abide by the deployment.

It has now been decided that the ANC Councillors convene a special council meeting for next week where the decision of the deployment committee will be implemented.

The ANC is deeply concerned at a decision by certain Councillors to dismiss two workers without any regard to fair labour practice.

This has drastically increased tensions within the community, making it difficult to ensure effective service delivery.

Commenting on the meeting, ANC Western Cape Leader Ebrahim Rasool said:

"We are convinced that the only way forward is for the PEC deployment to be implemented, a full investigation into allegations made by the community and the reinstatement of the unfairly dismissed workers.

"This course of action has the support of the vast majority of Saron residents and we are determined to restore stability to the area."
