ANC deeply concerned at continued detention of Cape Town Journalist

27 April 2000

The ANC Western Cape today expressed deep concern at the arrest and continued detention of Cape Town photographer Obed Zilwa at the Harare Central police station.

Provincial leader Ebrahim Rasool said "Obed Zilwa`s arrest and detention on suspicion of involvement in the blast outside the offices of the Daily News boggles the mind. We know Obed as a dedicated and fearless journalist of absolute integrity. His commitment to democracy and investigative journalism are beyond question. I cannot even begin to seriously consider his possible involvement in the bombing of a newspaper`s offices. He should be charged or released. We are convinced that the truth will emerge. At a time when the press have a duty to report on the crisis facing Zimbabwe, a climate in which all journalists can do their work should exist"
