ANC salutes communities for their victory over beach apartheid

30 March 2000

The ANC welcomes the opening of the Silver stream beach as demanded by our branches and communities in Atlantis, Mamre, Pella and Witsand.

We have long insisted that there was no reason why the Blaauwberg Municipality should let poor Coloured communities pay for beach facilities, while the southern affluent and mostly white neighbours enjoy the best of facilities for free.

The ANC Provincial Executive Committee pays tribute to the communities who put an enormous amount of pressure on the Council and so made it possible that all people can now enjoy the fruits of their work.

In order to celebrate this victory over beach apartheid, the ANC will launch its Civil Rights Campaign Against Racism by attending a massive rally on Saturday 15 April at the Silverstream beach.

The ANC will mobilize its members from across the province to descend on the beach that day.

It will be attended by ANC Western Cape Leader Ebrahim Rasool, Provincial Secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha, members of the National Executive Committee, ANC MP for the area Danny Oliphant and other local ANC leaders.
