"NNP cash for tenders" scandal

"NNP cash for tenders" scandal

27 March 2000

The ANC Western Cape calls on the Public Protector to investigate whether the NNP received cash from a developer in return for influencing a multimillion-rand contract awarded to a developer who had made donations to the NNP. Allegations by ANC councillor Charles Arries were contained in the minutes of a December 1999 meeting of the Blaauberg Council and reported in the "Saturday Argus".

While it is accepted that political parties often receive donations from business people, the ANC is concerned that this particular tender was clearly influenced because a substantial donation was given to the NNP. Initially the contract was not even put out to tender and Rabcav appointed as facilitator by the NNP council.

Councillor Arries, who joined the ANC before the June elections last year, has been asked to prepare a detailed affidavid for submission to Mr Baqwa.

The ANC will also call on NNP leader in the province Gerald Morkel to come clean as to the amounts received and the timing of the donations.
