ANC not surprised at cabinet reshuffle

17 February 2000

The ANC is not at all surprised by Premier Gerald Morkel`s latest move to reshuffle his unrepresentative Cabinet.

This is due to the enormous pressure that we have put on them. Even members of the NNP are disgruntled with the current arrangement of the Coalition. They agree with the ANC that the Cabinet in its current form should be restructured.

The Coalition is an alliance for the preservative of white privilege. Nothing will satisfy people if the cabinet remain overwhelmingly white.

Nothing will change if a 12% white party remain in control of 60% of the budget, if a party with five Members in the Legislature are allocated four Ministers, which is one-third of the Cabinet.

What is more, the DP has been given the most important portfolios - Health, Education, Economic Affairs - which gives it more exposure than the NNP Ministers.

It is clear the restructuring has more to do with fending off the criticism from outside as well as inside the Coalition and the NNP, rather than a genuine attempt to reflect the reality of the province and its people.
