ANC Western Cape declares war on Racism

14 February 2000

The ANC Western Cape held a successful Provincial General Council on Saturday in which we declared war on racism in this province. Racism remains the main obstacle in the fight against poverty.

The conference also endorsed a call by Western Cape Leader Ebrahim Rasool to approach the President to host the conference on racism here in the Western Cape.

It was attended by more than 200 delegates from more than 300 branches, ten regions, provincial and national leaders.

In his keynote address, ANC NWC member Amos Masondo urged the conference delegates to get their act together. He outlined the ANC`s strategic vision with regards to the local government elections.

As the majority party and Official Opposition we still have a duty to speed up change in this province. The conference confirmed that mandate.

The Coalition does not represent the poorest of the poor who voted for the ANC. How can a 12% white party control 60% of the Cabinet budget? How can a party with five members of the Legislature be allocated four MEC`s? It is clear Gerald Morkel sold out his soul and his party in exchange for Leeuwenhof.

Althought the conference delegates was confident of the local government elections, delegates remained conscious of the weaknesses in our structures.

The PGC resolved the speedily revival of those branches with under 100 members. Fundraising remains a high priority.

The conference also gave the Provincial Executive Committee a firm mandate to address issues of indiscipline among our ranks, for example in cases where ANC members stand against ANC members in by-elections.

SUMMARY OF SPEECH BY EBRAHIM RASOOL, WESTERN CAPE ANC LEADER

Racism in the Western Cape remains rife. It has taken on new disguises.

Premier Morkel only praises Pres Thabo Mbeki`s vision of an African Renaisance because this provincial government is the only one with no single African in the Cabinet.

But when he talks about migration from the Eastern Cape, he gives a new expression to the word "kaffirs".

Racism tries to wear the clothes of decency and respect by calling itself `merit` and `equality`.

But the problem of the colourline is that when you are white, you privileged. When you are black, you are almost certain to be poor.

I hope this conference will endorse a call that the Western Cape approach Thabo Mbeki to host the conference on racism right here under the noses of the racists.

The opposition - NNP and DP - have won temporary reprieve for the banner of white privilege.

Gerald Morkel has been put as premier to maintain white privilege. But he is getting more and more unstable and vulnerable as his party realise he sold them out to the DP in exhange for Leeuwenhof.

How can a 12% white party control 60% of the budget? How can a party with five members in the Legislature be allocated four MEC`s?
