ANC`s first Provincial General Council after Elections

ANC`s first Provincial General Council after Elections

10 February 2000

More than 500 delegates will converge on the Western Cape College of Education in Kuilsriver, Cape Town this weekend (Saturday 12 February 2000) to chart the ANC`s way forward.

This is the ANC`s first Provincial General Council this millenium, and also the first after the ANC became the majority party in the June 2 elections last year.

Delegates will include one representative from each of the more than 400 branches, reps from ten regional executive structures, the Provincial Executive Committee, and members of the ANC National Executive Committee.

Western Cape Leader Ebrahim Rasool will open the conference. ANC NEC member Joel Netshitenze will deliver the keynote address.

Delegates will have the opportunity to briefly reflect on the last elections, as well as discuss some of the challenges the ANC face in this province - especially since we are a majority party not in government.

Against the background of the ANC January 8th Statement, the President`s State of the Nation address, as well as the opening of the Provincial Legislature this week, delegates will chart the way forward for the ANC.

The most critical challenge for the ANC is to still be able to deliver on the mandate received from the electorate - that is to speed up change in the Western Cape. This will inform our thinking around the Local Government Elections later this year.

Delegates will also reflect on the our structure`s strenghts and weaknesses.
