ANC removes former councillor from parliamentary list

25 January 2000

THE ANC Western Cape Provincial Executive Committee decided to remove former ANC Strand Councillor Norah Juries from the National Assembly Parliamentary list.

Mrs Juries resigned from the council and from the ANC earlier and is contesting the forthcoming by-election in Ward H18 in Strand as an independent candidate. The ANC`s candidate for the ward is Francis "Tanas" Lukas.

Mrs Juries was number 148 on the ANC`s list for the National Assembly - about 15 places away from possible elevation to being a Member of Parliament.

The SA National Civic Organisation, of which Mrs Juries is a provincial executive committee, also gave their support to the ANC`s candidate.

Commenting on the issue, ANC Provincial Secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha said: "Mrs Juries resigned from the ANC without ever raising any of her grievances with us.

"Her resignation came at a time when the ANC restructured the council and she was not offered any significant position. So we assume that is the reason why she resigned.

"As the ANC we are disappointed with her behaviour. As an important community leader, she should have displayed more wisdom and maturity."
