20 January 2000

ANC leader in the Western Cape Ebrahim Rasool has welcomed the contribution by National Government to job creation projects in four Western Cape towns.

The National Department of Provincial and Local Government under Minister Sydney Mufamadi has allocated R3-million to assist with local economic development.

Dysselsdorp in the Karoo will receive R1m for a tourism project; George in the Southern Cape will receive R220,000 for the Khulani Women`s project; Lamberts Bay in the North West Coast will receive R1,5m for a tourism development project at Bird Island and Zoar (in the Karoo) will receive R339,000 for a dried fruit production project.

Mr Rasool said: "The ANC believes that local government has a key role to play in local economic development.

"These allocations will contribute to job creation, the key challenge facing our country. We call on all our councils to initiate local job summits to look at ways in which local government, business and the community can stimulate local economic development."
