ANC to protest against beach entrance fees

7 January 2000

The ANC doubts the Blaauwberg Municipality`s assertion that they spended R17 million on upgrading Silverstream Resort, as reported in the Cape Times this morning.

Commenting on this, ANC Mamre Branch Treasurer Dave Pick said: "The place is in a mess. The facilities are poor. It is not being properly maintained.

"We are in posession of a letter from the Blaauwberg Municipality in which they admit that the facilities is not up to scratch.

"There is no way they could have spended that amount of money on it. If that is the case than they must be investigated on how the money was spend and on what...

"As the communities of Pella, Witsand, Atlantis and Mamre we are determined to have the beach opened so that our poor communities can have free access to our natural resources.

"Big Bay is one of the best beaches in the Blaauwberg Municipality, it is on the doorstep of white people and free of charge.

"But we here must pay... WHY?"
