ANC SWEEPS PRINCE ALBERT BY - ELECTION WITH 63% MAJORITY

The ANC's Robert Filliers swept to victory in the Prince Albert by - election yesterday recording a 63% majority. The result was as follows:

Registered voters : 933

Total votes cast : 653 (69% poll)

ANC - Mr Robert Fillies : 414 votes (63%)

NP - Mr Lodewyk May : 220 (33%)

Independent : 8

Spoilt ballots : 11

The ANC's campaign was boosted by the withdrawal of the independent candidate, Pastor William Joseph, who threw his weight behind the ANC the day before the by- election. However his name could not be withdrawn from the ballot paper on election day.

Commenting on the victory ANC provincial leader Mr Ebrahim Rasool said:

"The ANC's victory was the result of hard work on the ground and was greatly assisted by the very serious divisions in the NP. Prince Albert is the 8th consecutive by- election contested between the ANC and NP which has been won by the ANC.

"In 1995 we won by 12 votes. Yesterday we won by almost 200 votes and increased our majority to 63%. On the other hand the NP dropped from 412 votes in 1995 to 220 votes in 1999. It was clear from our canvassing that the NP's divisions at a provincial level have demoralised their supporters at local level.

"The writing is on the wall for the NP. It is clear that when Gerald Morkel opens the provincial legislature tomorrow, he will do so as the leader of a weak and divided party. Many would agree with the assertion that this could well be the last opening of a provincial legislature by an NP premier.

"I would like to convey my congratulations to Mr Fillies and the local ANC branch as well as the Karoo ANC region".
