ANC condemns racist attack on farm worker

16 May 2002

The ANC Chairperson of the Western Cape Provincial Legislature Standing Committee on Agriculture: Shaun Byneveldt has commented on the alleged racist attack on Worcester farm worker Steven Tshabalala.

Byneveldt said: "Farm workers still bear the brunt of racism, exploitation, abuse and violence in many platteland areas. The allegations made by Mr Tshabalala are extremely serious. Failure to pay workers as promised, the illegal dop system and violent racist attacks have absolutely no place in our democracy.

"The ANC condemns all offences against the poor in the strongest terms and calls for a full investigation into this matter. The law must be seen to uphold the rights of farm workers, they are amongst the poorest and most vulnerable South Africans.

"I commend Mr Tshabalala for his courage in reporting this matter. If we do not fail him, hopefully more farm workers will follow his example and help us to address their needs.

"I also call on farm communities, farmers and workers, black and white to oppose all discrimination. Small rural communities should be an example to us all of non-racism and dignity as people work so closely together."
