ANC Provincial Working Committee deliberation on Premier Marais` statements on Gay conspiracy

13 May 2002

The ANC Western Cape Provincial Working Committee meeting on Monday night under the Chairpersonship of Ebrahim Rasool issued the following statement in the name of its Provincial Secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha.

The ANC wishes to make its position on four matters clear. Firstly, the ANC has a long and unequivocal commitment to the rights of women. It considers any violation of women as completely unacceptable. Due process should be followed to ensure that any allegation made in this regard is properly and adequately dealt with.

The ANC condemns without reservation discrimination against any group, including homosexuals and reaffirms the protection afforded them under the Constitution.

The rights and freedom contained in the Constitution were rights for which thousands of people fought for and in many cases died for. We must not allow these fundamental rights to become tools in petty political games in the hands of those who in many instances did nothing for the achievement of these goals.

The ANC condemns the hypocrisy of the DA. Much of what is taking place at the moment is part of a carefully orchestrated campaign. Its timing together with the fact that the DA had nothing to say on the matter when Premier Peter Marais was their mayoral candidate, smacks of hypocrisy.
