HIV prevalence increase amongst Western Cape Youth

HIV prevalence increase amongst Western Cape Youth

14 June 2002

Cameron Dugmore MPL, ANC Western Cape Spokesperson on Health has responded with deep concern to the increase in HIV prevalence amongst Western Cape youth as made public today.

Dugmore said: "This is very agonizing news on the eve of National Youth Day. The youth of our country have sacrificed much for our democracy over many decades. This increase in HIV numbers is about the lives of many ordinary young people; lives that we must do all we can to value and improve along with all our people.

"I call on the youth of our Province to abstain from sex or remain faithful and condomise. Your lives are valuable. Youth Day is a reminder of what you have achieved and a sign of what you must still do for our future as a nation. We need you."

In his capacity as Chairperson of the Provincial Standing Committee on Health, Dugmore added: "These figures emphasise the need for us to maximise the opportunity presented by the Standing Committee’s visit to the Overberg Region on the 29th June. We will meet with 15 young people from each town to discuss their health issues. Appropriate government departments and local government will also be present to assess the health needs of our youth."
