ANC welcomes Oudekraal ruling

21 June 2002

ANC Western Cape MPL and Spokesperson on the Environment, Max Ozinsky has welcomed the High Court ruling that the Oudekraal land on the Atlantic Seaboard cannot be developed.

Ozinsky said: "This ruling is a victory for the Cape`s environmental heritage and natural beauty and for the protection of religious rights. We hope that the unique Twelve Apostles will now be saved from further development and preserved for future generations. This will impact on tourism development, environmental conservation and our city environment.

"The preservation of the Muslim kramats and graves at Oudekraal which are part of our city`s history, culture and religious life is a sign of respect proper to our democracy."

"The ANC calls on Mr Wiehahn and the South African National Parks Board and the South African Heritage Resources Agency to negotiate the transfer of this land to the Cape Peninsula National Park. The future of both the land and the heritage sites must be secured once and for all."
