ANC welcomes investigation into 5 Western Cape Local Authorities

26 June 2002

Koleka Mqulwana ANC MPL and Chairperson of the Provincial Standing Committee for Local Government has welcomed President Mbeki`s institution of an investigation into alleged mal-administration, corruption and irregularities in five Western Cape local authorities.

Mqulwana said: "We welcome the President`s action and the investigation by the Scorpions. This will help secure the stable, competent and clean government that our people deserve and need.

"Local government is closest to the needs of ordinary people. No corruption or mal-administration can be tolerated, especially when it affects services, delivery and transformation at local level. We need committed and accountable public representatives and officials.

"The ANC will support the investigation in any way it can. Anyone found guilty of criminal or improper behaviour in this process must face due legal process."
