ANC condolences and visit to bus accident bereaved this afternoon in Thembaledhu

15 July 2002

ANC Provincial Secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha has responded with shock to last night`s horrific bus accident outside Fort Beaufort. Eighteen people, including four children were reportedly burnt to death after the bus they were travelling home in after attending a funeral service collided with a cow.

Skwatsha expressed his sympathy saying: "The ANC grieves with the friends and family of those killed and injured in this tragic accident. The organisation will visit the bereaved today to express personal sympathies and to offer any help possible. It is impossible to replace South Africans who are lost so unnecessarily. The individual impact of losses like this on families and communities is immense.

"It is a sad fact that the poor are the most vulnerable road users in our country. Poverty alleviation must go hand in hand with efforts to make our roads and vehicles and people using roads safer. All South African lives are valuable."

ANC office bearers including Regional Chairperson Llanville Reid [082 684 6404], Zonal Chairperson Joe Mkondo [082 420 4033] and ANC Chief Whip for George: Piet van der Hoven [082 957 7799] will visit the bereaved this afternoon at 17h00 in Thembaledhu Township of George to express their condolences and to offer support at this difficult time.
