ANC to ask Provincial Govt To look at bank switch after appointment of former banker to top DA position

5 August 2002

The ANC Western Cape will be asking the Finance MEC Ebrahim Rasool to look at the way in which the DA Provincial Administration changed the Thirteen Billion Rand (R13bn) provincial account from First National Bank to Absa Bank.

This is in the light of the appointment of Erik Marais, a former senior Absa bank official and DA member, to a senior position in the Cape Town Unicity.

The DA made a switch from the FNB to the Absa bank just weeks before they left the provincial government.

Says ANC Provincial Secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha: "The crudeness with which the DA has appointed Mr Marais in the Unicity, suggests he was rewarded for favours done to the party.

"This behaviour further suggests that the relationship between the DA and Mr Marais was not a professional relationship as that of a banker and a client.

"Taxpayers of the province want to be absolutely sure that the award of the provincial account to Absa was based on sound principles of governance and not because of the intimate relationship between Mr Marais and the DA.

"The ANC is naturally suspicious because the relationship between the DA and Absa through Marais is closer than it should be.

"The question we want answered is whether this compromised, in any way, the professional relationship between the bank and the provincial government in the award of the tender."
