ANC Western Cape in solidarity with Palestine

ANC Western Cape in solidarity with Palestine

31 July 2002

About 80 ANC members today took part in a lunch-time placard demonstration at the US Consulate in Cape Town, in support of the people of Palestine.

The demonstration was attended by MP`s, MPL`s, councillors and ANC members as far as Eerste River and Wynberg.

Said ANC Provincial Secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha: "The ANC wants to make the point that we support the people of Palestine in their struggle for freedom and an independent state.

"We call on the US Government to exert pressure on Mr Ariel Sharon to stop the air raids on innocent people and children, and end the illegal occupation of Palestinian land.

"We have seen brutal air strikes on Palestine. What was particularly heartbroken were the scenes of the dead bodies of babies being retrieved from the rubble in the aftermath of the air strikes.

"The President of the United States of America has no right to decide who the leader of the Palestinian people should be. Considering the fact that the people of America could not even decide whether George Bush should be their president, he (Bush) should shut up.

"With this demonstration we have made it clear that we are in complete solidarity with the struggles of the people of Palestine.
