Walk-over end of day three

Walk-over end of day three

10 October 2002, Thursday

Members of the former DP component of the DA together with NNP members who came home to the ANC-NNP coalition today enabled the coalition to take over the Overstrand Municipality and Overberg District Council.

The coalition has now taken over the Boland District, Witzenberg (which includes Tulbagh), Garden Route/Klein Karoo District, and the Swellendam municipalities on Wednesday, to add to Cape Town, Drakenstein (which centres on Paarl) and Oudtshoorn the day before.

Speaking at the reception at the Premiers residence Leeuwenhof in Cape Town, this morning, NNP leader and Premier Marthinus van Schalkwyk said the NNP/ANC now controlled four of the five district municipalities in the province.

"These municipalities are key to our efforts to bring real stability and delivery focus back to the local governments of the Western Cape. They represent large, well-populated areas, with very important economic and symbolic value for the people of the province," he said.

ANC Provincial Leader Ebrahim Rasool said: "It is clear the process of councillors wanting to join the coalition of hope is gaining momentum.

"These are two very significant areas. When the ANC made its calculations prior to this process, we marked Overstrand as difficult. But I am happy that we can come together in the interest of the poor."
