Outcome of Swartland ward 10 by-election

Outcome of Swartland ward 10 by-election

18 September 2003

The ANC Western Cape is satisfied with the fact that we have been able to increase our vote with six percent in the Swartland Ward 10 by-election, Malmesbury yesterday. It is consistent with trends elsewhere in the province and confirms that the ANC`s support is continuously growing.

The DA got 810 votes (58%), ANC 388 (28%) and the NNP 182 (14%). During the 2000 local election the ANC received 22%, but we have been able to increase this.

Said ANC Deputy Provincial Secretary Marius Fransman: "Malmesbury was always going to be a difficult area for the ANC to win. But we are happy with the good work done here and have learned some valuable lessons.

"This increase in support is consistent with trends elsewhere and confirmed in recent research surveys."
