ANC-WC on public hearings and Farm Worker Forums

ANC-WC on public hearings and Farm Worker Forums

20 October 2003, Monday

The year 2003 to date has yielded 24 incidences of attack on farms in our province.

The Phillippi area alone accounts for seven of these, an increase in last year`s figures. We have seen some losing their lives, others being seriously wounded, some maimed and disfigured. In addition, property and possessions have been lost.

As a Western Cape Legislature we cannot stand idly by and pretend that we are not affected. Not only do criminals harm those who directly suffer attack at their hands, but freedom, democracy and our right to a prosperous future also become casualties in the process.

All forms of violence and crime perpetrated against members of farming communities constitute a violation of human rights. We must condemn it as such and we all certainly share in the responsibility to build and defend our future. The time to act is now.

Furthermore, complaints pertaining to alleged non-compliance with labour legislation, unlawful evictions and racism in farming communities feature continuously.

Some argue that insufficient enforcement mechanisms exist. Others indicate a lack of knowledge of the laws by both farm workers and farm owners. A lack of willingness by employers to comply is often also suggested. All of these matters are important and certainly beg enquiry.

Accordingly, the Standing Committees on Agriculture & Community Safety in the Western Cape Legislature have decided to hold public hearings and farm worker forums (see attached programme) to focus on these critical matters.

We invite input and response from all interested parties.
