ANC Western Cape says: Unite Against Racism!

11 November 2003

The violent attack on a girl pupil at Edgemead High School last week, should be condemned as an horrific act of racism and abuse of human rights. It must never be allowed to be repeated.

The ANC is resolute and unapologetic about its opposition to racism which appears to be endemic at the school.

To this end we have this morning decided to:

  • mobilise the whole community - White, African and Coloured -against racism by having a public meeting on Monday 17 November, 18h00 (will advise of venue at later stage);
  • hold a placard demonstration around and near the vicinity of the school the next morning (Tuesday 18 November, from 07h00-09h00);
  • and have a public demonstration when the accused appear on Friday 28 November at the Goodwood Magistrates Court.

Said ANC Provincial Secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha: "The ANC welcomes the investigation by the Education MEC Andre Gaum and the department. Follow-up action must be comprehensive and ensure that those who may have aided and abetted the departure of the culprits from the school are brought to book.

"The ANC also welcomes initiatives by the Human Rights Commission to investigate this and other instances of racism at schools.

"The ANC is committed to ensuring that an environment conducive to learning and examinations at Edgemead School is maintained. Having said this, we will mobilise the community to unite against racism in education."
